The Construction Users Roundtable (CURT) is proud to announce its nineteenth annual Construction Industry Safety Excellence (CISE) Award Winners and calls upon the industry to continue its progress in promoting construction site safety across the United States, Canada and the rest of the globe. As one of its core initiatives CURT is committed to working towards continued improvement in construction industry safety performance.
CURT is an association of leading corporations dedicated to the promotion of cost-effective construction methods. The members, as major consumers of construction services seek to foster improved construction safety performance through recognition of the achievement of excellence and the promotion of proven effective work practices.

Award applications were distributed to CURT members as well as leading national contractor associations and local construction user councils throughout the US and Canada.

Rychlik addressed CURT praising the firm’s employees for performance and recognizing the firm’s clients for setting the standards. The company had worked over 2.26 million work-hours during 2019.

2020 AGC Houston Large Specialty Contractor of the Year
SUBMISSIONS FOR THIS AWARD ARE reviewed by General Contractor members and Safety Committee leaders. After reviewing the entry, W.T. Byler Co., Inc. was selected as a recipient for this category due to its rigorous and outstanding safety protocols, which are imbedded within the company’s culture.
Founded in 1973 by W.T. Byler, the family-owned and- operated company is led by W.T. "Bill" Byler. The company’s projects are focused on heavy construction, industrial, commercial, railroad and government projects.
One of their major projects includes the site preparation for the ExxonMobil Campus in The Woodlands. At the peak of the multi-phased job, the company dispatched 254 workers and 156 pieces of construction equipment.
This past August, the company celebrated new safety excellence records, which included 500 days accident free, totaling 2,823,904 safe working hours and 8,477,236 work hours with zero lost-time accidents since 2015.
According to Wendell Rychlik, Executive Director for W.T. Byler Co., Inc., "Our staff meetings always start with a prayer, a safety moment and discussions that include project-related needs such as personnel, training, equipment needs and successful operation planning." Senior management team leaders are involved in the prevention of accidents and focus on employee behavior and the impact of management processes.
Safety performance, both hazard specific and hazard awareness, is monitored throughout the construction process by means of site visits and daily report reviews.
"Safety milestones are celebrated on jobsites, and our Tracking Zero program embodies this commitment to every work hour completed with zero accidents or incidents," Rychlik stated.

W.T. Byler Co., Inc. today announced it has received an ABC National Safety Award from Associated Builders and Contractors, which was planned to be presented at the 30th annual Excellence in Construction® Award during ABC Convention 2020 in Nashville, Tennessee, on August 18, 2020. WT Byler Co won in the NAICS Code 237 Division for Heavy and Civil Engineering Construction.

WT Byler Co Achieves Diamond Level in the ABC STEP Safety Management System
HOUSTON, TEXAS — WT Byler Co announced it has achieved Diamond Level in the Associated Builders and Contractor’s STEP safety management system. Founded in 1989, STEP participation demonstrates safety leadership and a cultural commitment to safety performance.
STEP applicants measure their safety processes and policies on 24 key components through a detailed questionnaire with the goal of implementing or enhancing safety programs that reduce jobsite incidents.

“We attribute our safety success not only to our employees,” said Rychlik, “but also to our clients who set the requirements and standards. Our Tracking Zero program embodies this commitment to every work hour completed with Zero accidents.”
Each day, WT Byler Co employees attend a job safety briefing, a morning stretch & flex session, and prepare a Job Safety Analysis (JSA) for each work activity. A new job briefing will be held if there are changes to working conditions or job tasks.
The company has maintained “Diamond” status nine years consecutively! In the 2018 safety category, they have received the ChevronPhillips – Contractor Safety Excellence Award and the prestigious Construction Users Round Table – Construction Industry Safety Excellence Award (CURT).

According to ABC’s annual Safety Performance Report, applying STEP processes dramatically improves safety performance among participants regardless of company size or type of work, and can reduce recordable incidents up to 85%, making the best-performing companies 680% safer than the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics industry average. Ratings range from Diamond, the highest, to Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze and Participant.

AGC OF AMERICA CONSTRUCTION SAFETY EXCELLENCE AWARD

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Associated General Contractors of America (AGC of America) announced that WT Byler Co, Houston, Texas, maintained a safety record that has earned the company an AGC National Construction Safety Excellence Award during the associations 95th Annual Convention in Las Vegas, Bellagio Resort. Paul Diederich, 2013 President-AGC of America, and Paul Becker, Chairman, Construction Practice-Willis, recognized 53 top safety performers of over 30,000 member companies.
The purpose of the CSEA is to recognize those construction companies who excel at safety performance. CSEA closely examined each candidate's commitment to safety, occupational health management and risk control. Unlike the National AGC Safety Awards (NASA) program that limits the criteria to frequency rates, the CSEA selection process is considerably more comprehensive. Judges looked for evidence of
company management commitment, active employee participation, safety training, and
work-site hazard identification control and safety program innovation.
Participants were required to complete the application forms and submit them to their local AGC Chapter. The local AGC Houston Chapter selected finalists in each category and submitted their recommendations to AGC of America. Members of the Safety & Health Committee reviewed the Chapter's submittals at the winter meeting. Then the finalists in each category competed at the AGC National Convention for either a 1st, 2nd or 3rd place award. Final judges included Mike Fredebeil,
Willis; Bill Parsons, Headquarters Air Force Safety Center; Anthony Militello, Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC); Mike Sterrett, Mirada Consulting; and Bob Fitzgerald, Southern Company Services.

ABC SAFETY EXCELLENCE AWARD

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) today announced that WT Byler Co – Houston, maintained a safety record that has earned the company recognition in the Heavy and Civil Engineering Contractor category of ABC’s National Safety Excellence Awards.

The 2011 National Safety Excellence Award winners were selected from ABC member firms that achieved Diamond and Platinum status in ABC's Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) program. During the selection process, national safety winners were judged on self-evaluation scores, lost workday case rates, total recordable rates, and interviews conducted by members of ABC’s National Environment, Health & Safety Committee.
Two WT Byler Co team members; Wendell Rychlik – Director of Business Development & Marketing and Geoffrey Pospisil – Director of Safety & Risk Management received the award on behalf of the entire WT Byler Co team at a dinner on Wednesday, February 22cd at the Arizona Biltmore - Phoenix, Arizona.
“We work hard to produce best possible product for our customers,” said Rychlik. “The companies we support have helped to shape our cities and communities. Providing them with our services is very important to us and this award sends them a strong message that we have a genuine commitment to workplace safety… and quality.”
Commitment to Excellence
The National Safety Excellence Awards are presented in three major North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code categories: NAICS 236 – Construction of Buildings; NAICS 237 – Heavy and Civil Engineering Construction; and NAICS 238 – Specialty Trade Contractors. Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) is a national association with 74 chapters representing 22,000 merit shop construction and construction-related firms. There were 750 member companies across the nation invited to apply for the award and only seventeen winners. Houston firms were winners of six of the awards. WT Byler Co was named "Safest in the Nation Heavy and Civil Engineering Construction to One-Million Man-Hours Category."

2011 DIAMOND LEVEL OF ACHIEVMENT - WT Byler Co takes the 2011 Diamond STEP
Award offered by the Associated Builders and Contractors; the highest honor recognizing a safety program that demonstrates the highest commitment for safety given to contractors that have achieved low experience modifier rates for on-the-job accidents.
ABC's Safety Training and Evaluation Process Awards - STEP recognize members who
employ effective safety practices on their jobsites and are based on 20 key elements of contractor safety programs such as management commitment, pre-planning for safety on jobsites, safety training and resources committed to safety. The STEP process; developed and written by contractors for contractors, is a tool designed to objectively evaluate safety programs, policies, procedures and training.
This year the Greater Houston Chapter earned 14 Diamond-level awards; the highest STEP level achievable, as well as 26 Platinum-level awards and 11 Gold-level awards... 51 honorees total in the field of construction.
Diamond-level winners must have an incidence rate at least 50% below the national Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) average in their particular NAICS code for at least three consecutive years and have an EMR (or "mod factor") at or below 0.700 (0.800 for companies with fewer than 100 employees).
